So, what exactly is the Essex County Learning Community? Who are the members? What is “the work” the districts are embarking on? What does it mean for me, and what are the benefits?

Working Sessions 2

10:15am- 12:00am
In better supporting the most marginalized students, we often see Universal Design for Learning, Social-emotional Learning, and Critical Race Theory used as singular approaches. What we do not often see is these strategies can be interwoven to be greater than the sum of their parts. The “Intersections Team” will help us ponder: How can we see the intersections between UDL, SEL and CRT, so that we might implement, with coherence, learning experiences that support the true and full complexity of real learners in real classrooms? It seems simple - listen to students and appropriately respond. So why is it so hard? Why can’t we accurately “see” our students as they are?

This section will explore ways to equip educators to have and lead constructive conversations about and across deep differences. It will draw on the processes of Reflective Structured Dialogue (RSD). RSD has been used since 1989 in the US and 25 other countries to help people have good conversations about the hardest differences: race, gender, politics, religion, etc. and has been adapted for classroom use.

Morning Workshop
August 3, 2022
10:15am- 11:45am
In this session, participants will have the opportunity to experience RSD. In small groups, using a dialogue script, participants will move through a formal dialogue from start to finish. After completion, facilitators will lead groups through a debrief of their experiences and use participant generated examples, concerns, and questions to further illustrate how this structure could support and generate opportunities for connection within multiple dimensions of their school communities.

Because dominant white culture encourages us to avoid conflict, many of us raised in it have not fully developed the insight, skill, and emotional stamina necessary to broach and navigate differences of perspective and opinion, especially when harm to a member of a marginalized group is part of the mix. Too often these conversations are completely avoided or broached only to go from bad to worse, leaving people in divided camps teeming with assumption and anger that further divides us and wreaks havoc on our communities. There is a different way. In contrast to the social norms of whiteness are norms designed to develop the vulnerability, skill, and courage necessary to create deep connection and resilience; ways of being that sustain and grow us personally and collectively. This workshop will explore how to embed new, transformational norms into our personal and institutional practices. PREREQUISITE: Transformational Conversations is only available to those who’ve first participated in I'm A Good Person.

(Opening Circle) This mini-session serves as an entry point to bring diversity, equity, and inclusion as theory into practice with an exercise in empathy, perspective-taking, and agency. Through a brief and common scenario, participants will consider how one’s role shapes their assessment of the situation and priorities that drive decisions about the response.

Questions are powerful invitations. The manner in which questions are posed and phrased is essential to changing the dynamics of "stuck" conversations. A question can put people off or it can lead to more expansive speaking, greater understanding and deeper connection. In this session, participants will examine the effects of questions and practice creating questions that can avoid common pitfalls of group conversations while creating curiosity and connection.

August 4, 2022
10:15am- 11:45am
The well-being of educators, inclusive of their social, emotional, and work-place wellness, plays a significant role in the overall health and success of all members in a learning community. Fortunately, educator well-being is malleable and can be supported through intentional and preventative actions ground in social and emotional learning (SEL). In this session, Dr. Cipriano will unpack the distinct elements of educator well-being, share findings and insights from this past school years research with schools in Essex County, and suggest data-informed entry points for supporting the well-being of all educators in the ECLC.

What does it mean to have a dangerous conversation? How does it feel? What happens when we have dangerous conversations? What are the consequences when we don't?
Participants will work with these questions, bring their own experience and insights to the table. Then we'll look at particularly falsehoods and how to raise these among colleagues and community.

In this coaching session, participants will generate dialogue questions related to a topic that they are interested in approaching within their current role. Facilitators will support them in identifying and prioritizing themes associated with their topics that could contribute to their question design and result in fresh thinking, and generate deeper connection and new, creative, and hopeful responses.
